Lunch time at the @swisshotelsonoma! Built circa 1840 as the home of Salvador Vallejo, it became the Swiss Hotel in the 1880s. Today, it still remains a hotel and a popular restaurant.🇨🇭🍝 #diningout #preservesonoma

If a house could ever be called masculine, I think this Rockville Centre Tudor Revival would be a top candidate. It was a few decades before this home was even built, but that's perhaps a fitting segue for the story of Arthur Rose Eldred. Arthur was a 17-year-old Rockville Centre resident in 1912 when he became America's first Eagle Scout. Prior to that, his Boy Scout troop, Troop 1, was deemed so impressive that it was invited to serve as an honor guard for the arrival of Robert Baden-Powell in New York harbor. Baden-Powell was the British founder of the Boy Scouts and he served on Arthur's Board of Review. The awarding of the first Eagle merit badge (it was not yet a rank) was delayed as the medal had not yet been designed. A month before the Labor Day ceremony, Arthur saved another troop member from drowning on an outing in Orange Lake, NY. He was subsequently presented with an honor medal for Lifesaving. Arthur went on to become a scout leader and his son, grandsons, and great-grandsons also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Additional images from Wikipedia show Arthur Eldred, the award ceremony, the Eagle medal, and Baden-Powell.

1914. It’s finally starting to look like Spring around here!
